About Maryhurst

Thousands of Kentucky’s children are in crisis, removed from their homes because they have been abused or neglected. For many, Maryhurst is the only answer. Recognized as one of the few agencies in the country capable of caring for teenage girls who are among the most traumatized victims, Maryhurst helps those who have nowhere else to turn for healing and hope.

For more than 165 years, Maryhurst has cared for children and families in greatest need. Founded by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1843, Maryhurst is the oldest operating child welfare agency in Kentucky. The Sisters provided a caring environment for girls who suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as homelessness. While still inspired by the Good Shepherd values of individual worth, mercy, reconciliation and zeal, Maryhurst has operated under an independent board of directors and management team since 1998. Today, Maryhurst exists as a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Nearly 200 children and teens are in our care each day, served through our residential treatment program for teenage girls, group home settings for teen girls and boys, foster care or after-school programs for at-risk youth.

Maryhurst has gained national recognition as a leader in the field of residential child care. Our work with greatest-need, abused and neglected children was highlighted in 2006 during an ABC News’ Primetime special hosted by Diane Sawyer entitled “Calling All Angels.” In 2008, Maryhurst received a national Angels in Adoption award from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute for our commitment to providing children with permanent homes.

Maryhurst is licensed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as both a child-caring and child-placing agency. We are accredited nationally through the Council on Accreditation.
