Some of the girls at Maryhurst learned to finger knit and crochet this week, which will come in handy during the next couple of cold months! These useful skills will help them exercise their minds and focus their thoughts as they make it through their journey of hope. This is one of the many creative ways that Maryhurst works with the female youth of the community to build stronger, more peaceful foundations for their future.

Maryhurst’s “Journey of Hope” luncheon is an annual fundraiser that highlights Maryhurst’s work with abused and neglected children, as well as pays tribute to its many generous supporters and the accomplishments of its alumni. You can support Maryhurst and provide hope for our children by attending our annual event, welcoming nearly 700 people. During the event Maryhurst celebrates alumni with the presentation of numerous scholarships, thanks individuals and corporations for their support and most importantly shares stories of transformation that take place with our children on a daily basis. Get your tickets for our luncheon here!

Additional Information

In addition to the luncheon, the Maryhurst Boutique will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for luncheon guests and the general public to view and purchase art, jewelry and gifts from local artists and many of the girls from Maryhurst.  All proceeds from boutique purchases benefit the children in Maryhurst’s care.

Alumna of the Year, Sheri Clarry

Sheri Clarry Photo The 2015 Alumna of the Year honoree is Sheri Clarry, a resident on the Maryhurst campus from 1977-1979. Running away from an abusive and alcoholic situation, Clarry would not return home, feeling like she didn’t belong; nor had any real family. “I was really the black sheep,” she states. For Clarry, Maryhurst gave her an eye opening experience where a love/hate relationship developed. She soon realized she was being given an opportunity to grow and excel as a young teen and quickly embraced that to turn her life around. Maryhurst taught Clarry some valuable life lessons including how special and unique she was. It also allowed her to get away from the drama and feel safe and secure.

Maryhurst impacted Clarry’s life in a way that allowed her to ease back into the reality that  her family was fractured and not really hers. “It felt exhilarating and I could actually breathe for the first time,” she recalls. Now having the confidence to love who she is and speak up for what she believes in, Clarry is enjoying the ride of life and knows she is a survivor.

Today, Ms. Clarry can be found in Sarasota, Florida where she has worked as a personal trainer for 25 years.  A mother of four, Clarry most recently adopted her 6 week old grandson. Her positive attitude and joy in life shows how truly far she has come and how Maryhurst helped her get there.
