Name: Kim Kleinsteuber & Phoebe (the Great Dane)
How long have you been volunteering for Maryhurst? Just over 1 year
Why do you volunteer? Keeps me busy and I love sharing my therapy pets with others, seeing how some people’s faces light up when they see the dogs makes it all worth it. Why do you choose to donate your time to Maryhurst? We visit several nursing homes and I think the kids at Maryhurst are a nice change of pace for Phoebe, as they are able to tolerate her leaning on them and can get down on the floor and cuddle with her.
Can you share an experience with Maryhurst that made you realize you were making a difference? Our very first visit there was a young girl that was overwhelmed by Phoebe’s size and seemed somewhat terrified, to the point she was hiding behind one of the counselors. But by the end of our visit, she was lying on the floor using Phoebe as a pillow. Whenever we’ve seen this young lady on other visits, she doesn’t hesitate to love on Phoebe now, and has even hugged and thanked me.
What advice would you give someone who is on the fence about volunteering? It is so worth it! There are many times I leave there with a happier heart than when I arrived.
What do you do when you are not volunteering? Besides working and sleeping, it seems I spend a great deal of time volunteering. Besides nursing home facilities, we (the dogs and I) are involved with the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) Program at Oldham County Library, Adventure Camp, and I volunteer at The Luci Center in Shelbyville.
