Name: Lori Mohr
How long have you been volunteering for Maryhurst?
I have had the pleasure working with Maryhurst for the last two years.
Why do you volunteer?
I’ve been blessed with a wonder family, a good job and a great group of friends so I believe when you’ve been blessed it’s your responsibility and privilege to share with others.
Why do you choose to donate your time to Maryhurst?
I’d been to Haiti after the earthquake with Westport Rd Baptist Church helping Global Outreach. We were discussing how we could help not only abroad but also at home. During our discussion Maryhurst, who just happens to be a neighbor, was mentioned so I attended their Meet and Greet and I have involved ever since. These girls have been through so much that I wanted to show them God’s love and that people do care.
Can you share an experience with Maryhurst that made you realize you were making a difference?
We were doing a clothing day for the girls and a young new student came in and started looking and trying on clothes. She was so excited about all of her treasures when all of a sudden she stopped and looked at me and said “I don’t got any money” and I got the privilege of telling her that they were hers just because people thought she was special and wanted her to have them. She beamed. Tears come to my eyes when I think of the pure joy a few clothing items can bring a 12 year old little girl.
What advice would you give someone who is on the fence about volunteering?
What are you waiting for? Get a group of friends together and do something for someone else just because you can. You’ve been blessed now it’s time to be a blessing. It’s a great way to help others and grow closer to friends and meet new people.
What do you do when you are not volunteering?
I love to hang out with family and friends; go boating; listen to live music; read a good book and help others.
