Young women living at Maryhurst’s residential program discovered the healing power of art, each contributing works to an onsite gallery titled Stand Together.

The exhibit featured a collection of paintings, poetry and crafts celebrating loyalty and relationship.

Below is an excerpt from one of the written works by Bri, a girl who has grown more interested poetry as a means of addressing and overcoming trauma. The work, STANDING TOGETHER THROUGH ALL LIFE’S SEASONS, expresses gratitude to the staff at Maryhurst:

Starting at eight, life was thunder, fog, and hail

But look at me now; I’m all crown and fairy tale

These are people who picked me up when I fell

Ms. Stacie, Ms. Mice, and especially Ms. Sherrel

Artists were advised by the Maryhurst Support Team, a group of counselors that specialize in bringing alternative treatment programs—such as exercise-, horticulture- and arts-based therapies—to children we serve.
