Maryhurst in Frankfort for KYGA23

Two youth from our residential program had the chance to meet with legislators

Earlier this month, we had the chance to bring several children living on our Lambeth Campus to Frankfort to meet with legislators and other officials to speak on topics that matter to them. We met with Lt. Gov Coleman, First Lady Beshear, Rep. Kimberly Moser, Rep. Samara Heavrin, Sen. Danny Carroll, and Rep Nima Kulkarni and had meaningful discussions about the foster care system. The young people who attended the Capitol have deep lived experience in the foster care system, and sharing their thoughts with lawmakers (adding rigor to foster parent training, ensuring broader resources for foster youth aging out of care, etc.) made a real impression.

Thank you to the Maryhurst counselors and other staff who helped make this cool opportunity happen! In addition to this visit, we’ve been active in advocacy at the state and local levels, attending legislative breakfasts, a meet-and-greet with the new Louisville mayor, lobbying meetings, and other important venues to have Maryhurst’s voice heard as it relates to child welfare and justice policy.
